Joy Story
I'd like to share a little story with you about one of my songs called "Joy". Joy is being used in a national advertising campaign to promote sedation dentistry. Below you'll find a link so you can watch a TV interview I recently had about Joy. In the interview you will also see the TV commercial!
The story behind the song... It's really quite simple, I woke up on January 15th 2005 and as is usual for me I had a musical idea in my head that I wanted to record. I sat down at my keyboard and laid the first track, an organ. The second, third and forth were also organs. 4 organs played in slightly different ways and mixed together to form one thick "organious" sound.

After that I felt inspired for the next track, a mono synth sound. It's common for me that while I'm composing I won't get the next part of my song until I lay down what I'm hearing in the moment. One part unlocks the next and the next. After a couple of hours, I had a really cool instrumental track going. I decided to step out and go for a walk. When I came back in, I began listening to the song while pacing through my house and I just starting singing, "There is joy in the morning light, there is joy joy joy joy in your life. There is joy in the children's eyes, there is joy joy joy joy in your life."
And so I laid down one vocal track after another, at one moment I recorded the highest note I had ever sung! (It's toward the end of the song.) A few hours later, all the tracks were complete and in a single day I had composed and recorded "Joy!" That has only happened about 3 times in my career. I later spent some time experimenting with the arrangement, did a little cut and paste action here and there, tweaked a few things and ba da boom, a simple but catchy song was born!
The story behind the commercial... It was filmed at a large mall in Nashville. We simply set up a green screen then invited any and everyone in the mall to come on stage and dance their dance of joy! It was all spontaneous. Considering that we were spending quite a lot of money to be there that day filming, it was quite a courageous move. There was no plan "B", we just believed that if we invited people to dance that they would. And boy oh boy did they ever! All kinds of people from all kinds of ethnic backgrounds, all ages, all styles, from 80's electro-dance and back flips to reggae and sweet disco moves, it was such a magical day! Ironically, most everyone who got up to dance had straight white teeth! It was perfect!
